Through the Presidential Classroom program, Copper Canyon Academy girls spend one week learning leadership skills, meeting students from other countries and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the federal government works. They also participate in role-playing exercises (sometimes acting as ambassadors of other countries) and write proposals that are presented at simulated world summit meetings. The Presidential Classroom program is offered to high schools throughout the world and has been around for about 40 years, but Copper Canyon is one of the few therapeutic schools that participates in the program.

Academics
PDFCopper Canyon Academy offers a challenging, fully accredited college preparatory academic curriculum and progressive academic credit recovery program for teenage girls who have fallen behind in school. Our curriculum is accredited by North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement and CITA (Commission on International and Trans Regional Accreditation.) All classes are taught by Arizona Certified and/ or Master’s Level instructors.
Academic Planning and Credit Recovery
Copper Canyon Academy students actively work toward receiving a high school diploma. If a student earns all required credits while at Copper Canyon Academy, she will be awarded a diploma from Copper Canyon Academy. Otherwise, we will issue an official transcript to a successive school so the student can continue pursuing this goal. Incoming and outgoing CCA credit transfers are routine and seamless with other middle schools and high schools.
Course planning at CCA is completely individualized and customized. No matter the student’s age or grade, she is placed in the core and elective classes that are appropriate for her. This individualized attention, coupled with the fact that instruction at CCA is year-round, enables students in some instances to take full loads and recoup high school credits if necessary.
Small Class Sizes
Classes at Copper Canyon Academy are small, with a faculty-to-student ratio of approximately 1:10. Instruction is classroom-based, although in special circumstances independent study (including college credit work) may be arranged. Appropriate members of the faculty supervise and mentor a student’s independent studies.
Grading
Copper Canyon’s grading scale follows the usual pattern: an A is 90 and above; B 80-89, C 70-79; D 60-69; and an F is 59 and below. Students’ academic progress is closely monitored, and progress reports are issued to parents every three weeks.
Resource Assistance
Copper Canyon Academy provides as an essential part of its academic services a full-time certified resource and reading specialist who assists students who have learning differences. This specialist ensures that appropriate classroom accommodations are being implemented and works with virtually any student who needs extra help.
Traveling Classrooms
Instructors use creative approaches in their classes, taking advantage of the local cultural, historic, and geological riches in north-central Arizona. Other studies take place further afield, such as the Presidential Classroom program in Washington, D.C., the Utah Shakespeare Festival, or a Navajo reservation.
