Update on The Hunt for Amanda

Copper Canyon Academy, an Arizona-based residential boarding school for girls, was featured September 22, 2006 on the nationally syndicated "Dr. Phil" show. Dr. Phil had previously selected Copper Canyon Academy as part of a comprehensive therapeutic solution for a troubled, runaway teen who was featured on the program earlier in the year.

Amanda was a 16-year-old who ran thousands of miles away from home with her boyfriend. Dr. Phil sent a private investigator on the hunt to find her. It was a rocky road from the time she was tracked down to the moments after she left the Dr. Phil stage. She did, however, eventually agree to go to the Copper Canyon Academy, a therapeutic boarding school for girls, and she's been there for the last nine months.

Copper Canyon Academy - called "one of the nation's top therapeutic boarding schools for girls," by Dr. Phil - is a licensed therapeutic boarding school that accepts girls ages 13 to 17 who are seeking to make positive changes in their lives and overcome challenges such as depression, anger, family conflict, substance abuse, or academic underachievement. The school's comprehensive approach, designed to address the unique needs of adolescent girls, is also known for its inclusion of the entire family through on- and off-site therapeutic exercise and guidance.

"I'm definitely a different Amanda. I've changed my attitude and behavior," she says. "I have grown up a lot. I don't yell at people anymore like I used to. Before I came to Copper Canyon, me and my parents didn't really get along. I quit with the attitude and [being defiant] because it wasn't getting me anywhere."

It's been a struggle, yeah," says Amanda, her voice breaking. "It definitely has, but I've made it through."
