Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. – Margaret Mead
One of the best ways for a young girl to learn about herself is to give of herself. At Copper Canyon Academy, one student’s desire to give back sparked a school-wide effort.
The young woman was inspired by her grandmother, who was receiving treatment for breast cancer at the Mayo Clinic, and decided to do her part by arranging a fundraiser for breast cancer research. She took the initiative, with the support of school staff and a committee of fellow students, to design and sell T-shirts that promoted breast cancer awareness. While the effort began by selling shirts to staff and students, the giving spirit spread as parents got involved and bought the shirts as well.
The T-shirts read, “Together we can make it happen, just have faith,” a message that was just as poignant in the students’ daily lives as it was in their efforts to promote breast cancer awareness.
With the help of Copper Canyon staff, the students coordinated a special event to present the $2,000 they raised to the Mayo Clinic. To promote the event, the students decorated the campus with pink posters and donned their specially made T-shirts. Several guest speakers were in attendance to share their stories and remind attendees of the importance of this cause.
Copper Canyon is proud to work with young women who have struggled with issues of entitlement, low self-esteem, negative peer relationships and academic underachievement and to see them grow into tomorrow’s leaders. Our goal is to create a community of warmth, respect, mutual cooperation, friendship, leadership and compassion, where students learn to confront their past and look forward to their future by following a proven trail to success.
