Maintenance means that your daughter should be able to successfully avoid any temptations to return to problem behavior. The goal of the maintenance stage is to maintain the new behavior. People in this stage often remind, and congratulate, themselves of how much progress they have made.
Students in maintenance will be acquiring new skills to deal with life and avoid relapse. They are able to anticipate the situations in which a relapse could occur and prepare coping strategies in advance.
Your daughter will be aware that what she is striving for is personally worthwhile and meaningful. Self-awareness is a clear indication that she is developing an “internal locus of control.” Even though she may have thoughts of returning to her old behavior, she will resist the temptation and stay on track.
It is important to remember that it is normal and natural to regress, to attain one stage only to fall back to a previous stage. This is just a normal part of making changes in your behavior.
