Students from Copper Canyon Academy (CCA) had the chance to show their art portfolios to art colleges around the country at National Portfolio Day in Phoenix on December 12. The trip was led by CCA Academic Director Ken Buxton and art teacher Bev Miller, and was the fifth consecutive year that CCA girls attended this annual event.
Nearly 40 art colleges participated during this year’s National Portfolio Day, providing a unique opportunity for high school seniors and juniors to display their artwork to representatives of art schools and receive feedback. Doing this can be an empowering experience for girls, especially when they realize that they can qualify for a professional art program.
It can also represent a key step in a student’s application process. At Portfolio Day, many CCA students’ portfolios have been assessed and accepted on the spot as having met the college’s portfolio/visual requirement for admission. Largely because of Portfolio Day, former CCA students are currently attending such art schools as the Savannah College of Art & Design, Kansas City Art Institute, Ringling College of Art & Design, Brooks Institute and the Laguna College of Art & Design.
CCA’s annual representation at National Portfolio Day represents a specialized feature of CCA’s comprehensive college counseling program.
